HALLS OF SACRED REMAINS is the third Mission of the LIMBO layer. It takes place entirely within and outside of a large "castle," and is one of the most complex environments of Act 1. Though the door to the boss arena is present in the first room, it is locked behind a split color door, requiring only one Skull to open. This level introduces the Hideous Mass, another miniboss that won't reappear until way later on.

Red Path[]

Courtyard Arena[]

Initially, 9 Strays and 2 Streetcleaners will spawn.

  • Killing all Strays will summon 4 Schisms located on and around the grass area of the courtyard.
  • Killing all Streetcleaners will summon 5 Drones
    • Killing either all Schisms or Drones will awaken the Cerberus on the end of the bridge.

Lava Arena[]

Initially, 4 Strays and 2 Schisms will spawn.

  • Killing all Strays will release the 2 Streetcleaners from the pillars.
    • Killing both Streetcleaners will summon a Malicious Face.
  • Killing both Schisms will summon 4 Drones.
    • Killing all Drones will summon the other Malicious Face.

Red Skull Arena[]

Note that, unlike most arenas, it is possible to grab the Skull and leave the arena without killing any enemies.

Walking forward from the start will summon 8 Filth, 2 Drones and 2 Streetcleaners.

  • Killing all of the above-listed enemies will summon a Malicious Face and 6 Strays.

Moving towards the Skull platform will summon 6 Strays and 1 Schism.

Approaching the Red Skull will cause 3 Streetcleaners to burst from the wall and awaken the Cerberus. A pit in the new hole in the wall drops past the Chute Room into the Blue Skull Room, though a gap in the chute can allow the player to land in the Chute Room instead.

Blue Path[]

Unlike the Red Path, the Blue Path can be taken in either direction, with some enemy placements changing dependent on the direction V1 came from. This path assumes the player goes to the right instead of straight ahead.

Skylight Hallway[]

A Streetcleaner drops out of the skylight while 2 Schisms spawn behind it.

NOTE: If you jump up to where the streetcleaner came from (shotgun blast to jump up there) you will find a bar of soap. This one shots anything, including bosses, it isn't a one time use, but it slips easily, so it can be lost out of sight, or end up in lava.

Lava Stairs Room[]

At the top 4 Filth and a Drone spawn. Continuing down will spawn 4 Strays and 2 Schisms. Even further down is a Malicious Face. Through the door is a small room with a lava fall which spawns 3 Drones and 3 Strays.

Blue Skull Room[]

Picking up the Blue Skull does not spawn any enemies. Continuing up the staircase there are 8 Filth and 3 Strays. Further up are 4 Strays surrounding a Schism. Before the gap in the path, there will spawn 2 Schisms and 3 Drones.

Staircase Arena[]

11 Filth will spawn spread across the stairs, and the Cerberus will awaken.

Water Corridor & Chute Room[]

After the Staircase Arena, there is a short corridor with large stone steps over shallow water that spawns 2 Streetcleaners and 2 Drones. Past that is a small room containing a Malicious Face and a dropdown chute that leads down into the Blue Skull Room.

Hideous Mass Arena[]

If attempting to P-rank, the kill counter should have 124 kills when entering the arena - 65 from Red Path and 59 from the Blue Path. The arena is octagonal with a semi-spherical glass top, with the Hideous Mass on a platform in the center. Killing it will open the exit door located on the other side of the entrance.

(Soul Orb) - In the Lava Stairs room, a secret cavity beneath the lowest stairs hides a Soul Orb.

(Soul Orb) - Next to the Blue Skull, sliding into where the waterfall emerges from the wall lets V1 slip into a secret room containing a Soul Orb.

(Soul Orb) - In the Courtyard Arena, sliding up a slope next to the exit door will let V1 slip into a crack in the wall, leading to a Soul Orb.

Secret Encounter
After returning to the start area and placing both skulls, a secret glass pane door opens at the back, leading you to a secret boss fight against Swordsmachine AGONY and Swordsmachine TUNDRA.

Slab III
After beating the Secret Encounter, a door opens in the back of the arena, revealing Slab III.

Soap
As of the Soul Survivor update, the roof above the skylight hallway now contains a pedestal holding a bar of soap, which can be thrown at enemies to instantly kill them. This is a reference to another New Blood title, DUSK, where the same bar of soap is present in every level. If you have gained enough Style beforehand and are struggling with the Hideous Mass, this can be an easy way to secure a P-rank.

Trivia[]

  • Any place that a Streetcleaner is supposed to break through can be broken by V1 using its more powerful weapons, triggering its attack early.
  • It used to be possible to force a second Streetcleaner to spawn in the skylight hallway by shooting out the other skylight. This was partially fixed in the Soul Survivor update; a duplicate Streetcleaner can still be spawned and killed for rank credit if the nearest skylight is destroyed before entering the room and triggering the encounter, but if it is still alive when the room's spawns are triggered, the duplicate Streetcleaner will be erased from reality.
    • Killing the duplicate Streetcleaner will still grant you an extra enemy kill, making the maximum possible kill count without Cheats 128.
  • This level's title is a reference to the game Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, which features a location called the House of Sacred Remains. This is supported by the level's music being called 'Castle Vein.'
  • Even after Act II, this level still has the highest enemy count in the game.
  • The ceiling hanging lanterns in this level have unique properties. They not considered a solid object but still have all collision, this means that coins landed on a lantern will remain active and can still preform ricoshots, despite being landed on a solid surface.
  • The water in Agony and Tundra's arena and the water in the first room of the red skull path are some of the few water sources in the entirety of the Limbo layer that are real. Most other water sources in the layer are in fact projected holograms, the only other exception being the sewer water in [ 1-2: THE BURNING WORLD ].
