Is cookie dough safe to eat?

Regular cookie dough is generally not considered safe to eat because of the raw eggs and flour in the dough. This particular recipe does not have eggs in it (they aren’t necessary if you aren’t baking the dough), and you can easily heat treat the flour in order to kill any bacteria that might not be safe. Then you can eat as much cookie dough as you want!

How to heat treat flour

You can either heat treat flour in the microwave or in the oven. To use the microwave, just place the flour in a glass bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals until the flour reaches 165°. This usually takes about 1 1/2-2 minutes depending on your microwave and the amount of flour.

To heat treat flour in the oven, preheat the oven to 300°. Spread the flour out on a baking sheet and then place the flour in the oven, checking every 2 minutes until the temp of the flour is at 165°. This usually takes about 6-10 minutes.

Ingredients in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles

Butter – An absolutely necessary ingredient in cookie dough, so you can’t leave this one out.

Brown sugar – For best results, make sure your brown sugar is fresh and soft.

Flour – You’ll need 2 cups of flour to make the cookie dough. All-purpose flour works best, but you can use a gluten-free substitute or even oat flour is yummy too!

Sweetened condensed milk – This ingredient is a little strange, I know. It’s not normally in cookie dough and I’m guessing that’s because it probably doesn’t yield very good baked cookies, but it really adds the right amount of sweetness and consistency to the edible cookie dough in the truffles. It prevents the cookie dough from being crumbly or falling apart.

Vanilla extract – The higher the quality of vanilla, the better.

Miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips – Because the truffles are pretty small, I definitely prefer to use the mini chocolate chips, but you can absolutely use regular sized chocolate chips if that’s all you have on hand!

Almond bark (chocolate or vanilla) – You’ll need about 8 ounces of chocolate for each batch of cookie dough truffles. You can use almond bark or chocolate chips or any other kind of chocolate you’d like!

CAN I USE CHOCOLATE CHIPS INSTEAD OF ALMOND BARK?

Absolutely! You can use melting chocolate, chocolate wafers, or chocolate chips depending on what you have on hand, can find in a store, or would prefer to use. This recipe is pretty versatile so you can even swap out the chocolate flavor for a different variety like milk chocolate or a colored chocolate if trying to fit into a festive party theme.
