“The League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties invites you to a Picnic in War Vets’ Park Pavilion in Olean on Tuesday, June 18 from 5:30 – 7:30. All are welcome!

Last Fall, our group committed to a refresh of a memorial urn, which was installed in the park in the mid1970s after being moved from its original location in front of old city hall. The monument is dedicated to Eveyln Agnes Keith, who lived from 1852 – 1916 and was an influential member of the Olean community. She was an early advocate for women’s right to vote, as well as the health and welfareof children and animals. Her history has been somewhat lost over the years and our LWV chapter decided to reintroduce her monument as well as her legacy to the community. Steve Cocca will have a presentation to do exactly that on June 18.

We will have music by Glenn Wahl, hear a song or two of the “Songs of the Suffragettes” and play a trivia game of moden empowerment music.

Supper will be provided by The Hungry Burro food truck. To plan properly and for more information about our group, please RSVP by June 14 to Margie McIntosh atcattarauguslwv@gmail.comor 716-904-1327. “

UPMC Expert: When to Worry About Forgetfulness

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (28)solomonswords0 Comments

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (29)

Suhag Patel, PA-C
Neurology, UPMC

The phenomenon of forgetfulness happens to everyone – misplacing keys, missing appointments, and even not recalling why you walked into a certain room at home – especially as we age. While instances like this are usually harmless, frequent confusion or memory loss are early indications for cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementias.

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and over 55 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Recognizing the early signs of this disease is vital, as the current treatments available are more effective in its earliest stages.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Each year the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce hosts a Firequacker Duck Derby to raise funds for the fireworks during Weekend in the Wilds. An anonymous donor who plans a family reunion around the fireworks is issuing a challenge. He would like to see North Broad Street filled curb to curb with ducks.

So far residents have adopted nearly 1,000 ducks. The goal is to reach 1300!. The anonymous donor recently adopted 360 of the quackers in the hope that others will come into the chamber office and lsupport the fireworks with a duck adoption. One duck may be obtained for $2.00 while a 6-quack can be selected for $10.00. The ducks will paddle down North Broad Street with the help of the Emporium Fire Department at 2pm on Saturday July 6.
